  •  SEARCH OPTIONS

The main search page offers a powerful search facility with options to easily limit searches. Always select the 'search' button located below the 'keyword' box after entering a term in the 'keyword' box or making a selection from boxes on the screen to generate the search.

    KeywordBox - in a Nutshell

The 'keyword' box allows you to perform simple or complex searches on all the text provided for each photograph.

    1. Type a term or exact phrase in the "keyword" box or select one or any combination of terms from the "Suggested searches" boxes.
    2. Press the "search" button.
    3. Thumbnail versions of the results will display.
    Narowing a Search
Entering a word or exact phrase in the keyword box initiates a search of all fields
    1
       in all records
    2
on Pictorial Canterbury - that is every word on Pictorial Canterbury
will be checked for a match.

To limit the number of images retrieved (or narrow a search) these options are provided:

    1. "Advanced" box

'Advanced' selection box lists the following options to narrow a search :
And, Truncate, Or, Nearby, Except, Wildcard.

These are known as Boolean Logic terms and adding them before, after or between search terms will refine or narrow a search.

    Term

    Symbol

     Description

And ^ Images will be found only if each word/s or phrase is found within an image description, eg. Campsie and school and 1923.
Truncate * If you are not sure how to spell a word; or if the word is plural or you want to know what words are available, you can key in part of the word or characters, known as the word stem or root and the * symbol. For example horse*. This example may find all images of horse and horses and horsefly and horseriding and etc.
Or , Images will be found if either word(s) or phrase is found within an image description, eg. Kangaroos or Wallabies.
Nearby // Images will be found only when two words are indexed close together in the image description: 10 words maximum, eg. Dog//Cat will only find images if these words are within 10 words of each other. Dog/5/Cat will only find images if these words are within five words of each other.
Except - Images will be found only if the image description does not contain a word/s or phrase following Except, eg. Beaches except People.
Wildcard ? Searches can be performed if you only know part of the keyword. This is useful if you are not sure how to spell the keyword or if the keyword is plural. The wildcard ? can be positioned at the beginning, at the end or anywhere in the keyword. A keyword can have more than one wildcard in different positions. For example:
    • sea? would return images whose descriptions contained words that started with 'sea' followed by anything else eg. sea, search and seascape.
    • ?side would return images whose descriptions contained words that ended with 'side' eg. inside, outside and aside.
    • ?son? would return images whose descriptions contained words that had 'son' in the middle of the word. eg. reasons, reasonable, seasons and seasoning.
