This database provides historical background on the names of North Sydney's streets, parks and localities. It was first published by the Stanton Library in 1985 as a booklet complied by Mary Vinter. A second edition was compiled by Margaret Park in 1996. This database is based upon the 1996 edition and subsequent research. It will be updated as more information is uncovered.

We rely heavily on the input of the community who know so well every 'nook and cranny' of their place. Historical Services staff have been greatly assisted by the work of the North Shore Historical Society and others who have provided information, in particular Carmel Rose, Robin and Peter Tranter and Beryl Graham.

In a number of cases there are differing opinions about the the origin of a street or place name. We have endeavoured to provide as accurate and complete a listing as possible. However we also acknowledge that a work such as this is always evolving as more information is forthcoming, new streets are created and old ones renamed. Users are therefore invited to contribute further information with which we can update the database.
